The Langtang Valley Trek is a classic route just 61.8km north of Kathmandu. Despite being short, accessible, and affordable, it’s quieter compared to other popular treks in Nepal. Both experienced trekkers and starters can enjoy this trek. They can explore through Tamang villages, diverse landscapes, waterfalls, valleys, monasteries, and forests.

The trails offer great views of glaciers and mountains like Langtang Lirung, Ganesh Himal, Jugal Himal, Dorje Lakpa, and Ganja La Pass. Langtang National Park, home to many animals and birds, is a protected area along the trek. Furthermore, keep an eye out for red pandas, langurs, musk deer, snow leopards, Himalayan tahrs, and Himalayan monals.

Despite the 2015 earthquake’s impact, Langtang has undergone significant reconstruction and is now welcoming trekkers once again.

Start of the Trek

Your journey to Langtang Valley Trek starts with a 7-hour drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi. The distance covered is 122km. There are no luxury transport services available in this region. You can travel either by local bus or hire a private jeep.

The local bus departs from Machhapokhari every morning between 7 and 9 AM. The fare ranges from $8 to $10 depending on the transport company. The main discomfort on the bus is crowded seats and many passengers.

Hiring a private jeep for 6-7 travelers costs around $200.

The road conditions vary from good to rough. The highway from Kathmandu to Trishuli Bazaar is narrow but in good condition. Beyond Trishuli Bazaar, the road becomes bumpy with occasional landslides along the way.

End of the Trek

You’ll turn your route back from Syabrubesi to Kathmandu at the end of the Langtang Valley Trek. The transport options are similar for the return journey.

How Difficult is Langtang Valley Trek?

The Langtang Valley Trek is a short and fair journey that doesn’t require technical skills or previous trek experience. You can finish it in 8 to 10 days, walking 5 to 7 hours daily. The most challenging part is the hike from Kyanjin Gompa to Tserko Ri, which is steep and rocky. However, most days offer a comfortable walk.

The highest point is 5,000m above sea level, so be cautious about Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Drink plenty of water and also know the symptoms. The weather can be unsure, especially during monsoon season. Pack essential gear and watch out for landslides. While it’s relatively easy, fitness and a positive mindset are necessary. Engage in cardio exercises to stay fit.

Langtang Trek Permits

TIMS card: You need a Trekkers Information Management Card (TIMS) for most treks in Nepal. Get it at the Tourism Board office in Kathmandu’s Bhrikuti Mandap. Bring your passport and two passport-size photos. The TIMS card costs 2000 Nepalese rupees.

National Park Entrance permit: You must also obtain a national park entrance permit for the Langtang trek. While you can get it at checkpoints in Dunche and Syabrubesi, we suggest getting it at the Tourism Board Office at Bhrikuti Mandap in Kathmandu. This costs 3000 Nepalese rupees plus 13% VAT.

Insurance for the Trek

Getting travel insurance is vital if you plan to trek to Langtang Valley. Trekking at high heights can lead to sudden situations, so having insurance is a must for Langtang Trek.

Make sure you choose a policy that covers emergency helicopter rescue, medical costs, natural disasters, theft, and losses.

Accommodation and Food

During the Langtang Valley Trek, you’ll stay at teahouses that offer rooms, food, and basic amenities like Wi-Fi, hot showers, and charging facilities. In the lower parts of the trek, you’ll find teahouses with high-standard rooms and attached bathrooms. While these teahouses provide standard services, they may charge higher rates. Some teahouses also offer free device charging facilities.

As you climb, teahouses offer basic services with twin shared rooms consisting of two single beds, a thin mattress, bedsheets, and a cushion. The shared toilets lack running water. For amenities like hot showers, Wi-Fi, and charging an extra fee is usually required.

These teahouses operate their restaurants, serving guests with a limited but filling menu. Options include Dal Bhat, chowmein, omelet, fried potatoes, pancakes, Tibetan bread, and soups. They also offer non-veg dishes like yak meat, canned fish, and chicken.

Best time for Langtang trek

The best time for the Langtang Valley trek is in Autumn (mid-September to mid-December) and Spring (March to May). These seasons offer pleasant daytime weather with cold nights. Winter is an option if you’re comfortable with colder temperatures.

Important/Information
Fitness
Altitude
Equipment

Medical
Insurance
Non-completed treks/tours

Should you experience any of these symptoms, please, notify your guide. Failure to do so (if altitude is continually gained) could result in the next stage of AMS, which, within a couple of hours, could lead to death, Resting at present level or descending to lower level generally alleviates the problem and you can continue.

Fitness:
Trekking in Nepal is a unique experience; so to get maximum enjoyment you should be physically and mentally prepared. No trek is easy so preparation should commence months before – walking, jogging, hiking (one or two bricks in pack) is helpful.

Altitude Sickness:
Altitude sickness, often known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), can affect any person, irrespective of age or level of fitness. No training can prevent this illness. Generally, those who trek too fast or gain altitude too quickly are more likely to be affected.

When trekking, “Bistarai” (slowly) is very good advise. Once over 3,000 meters, daily vertical gains of over 500, meters should not be exceeded. Your guide is aware of this so take his advice.

Symptoms:
– Nausea/Vomiting
– Loss of appetite
– Insomnia/sleeplessness
– Persistent headache
– Dizziness, fatigue, lassitude, heavy legs
– Slight swelling of hands and feet
– Breathlessness and breathing irregularly
– Reduced urine.

Equipment:
The company provides a kit bag (for your goods to be carried by porter) and tea houses have foam mattresses. If you are on camping trek, company provides the mattresses, tents etc. You may bring your own down jacket and sleeping bag or you may purchase (one quarter of price in KTM) or hire for around US$ 1 per item daily. Do not come without “well walked in boots” – poor boots, poor trek.
General:
– Lightweight walking boots “walked” them in prior to arrival in Nepal to avoid blisters.
– During day – light weight cotton pants, shorts, wrap around skirt.
– At night –track top, pants
– Cotton T-shirts.
– Long sleeve cotton shirt, if susceptible to sunburn.
– Sun hat – sunburn is severe at rarefied altitudes.
– Thick outer wooden socks, thin inner cotton
– Vaseline for feet and crutch.

– Sleeping bag to –15c (If you do not have then we can give you here on returnable basis)
– Thermal underwear, woolen shirts and thick sweaters.
– Flannel shirt
– Beanie with ear flaps
– A pair of gloves
– Sandals or slip on shoes

Unexpected Situations:
No matter how well treks/tours are organized, the Nepali environment rules supreme. Flights and vehicular travel throughout Nepal are prone to cancellations and delays due to poor weather conditions at only a moment’s notice. When planning you itinerary it is advisable to add extra days. Just in case. Also take with you extra money to cover extra food/accommodation. The trekking company is not responsible for any additional expenses caused by delays.

Medical:
To fully enjoy you trek/tour you must have a complete medical check well before you depart. Preventive measures – better than treatment. Do not travel without vaccination: Hepatitis, A/B/C, polio, meningitis, tetanus, typhoid. Treatment of any illness outside of Kathmandu is almost non-existent, a basic first aid kit is essential as porters and villagers often seek basic help and also for your use, don’t forget to have a dental check. Altitude can cause loose fillings to fall out, Kathmandu does have some excellent dental facilities, but outside Kathmandu……………..!

Insurance:
This is your responsibility. The trekking company takes no financial responsibility for any delays, cancellation, medical treatment or evacuation; appropriate insurance coverage must include evacuation by helicopter. If no such coverage, the cost is huge.

Non-Completed Treks/tours:
The company is not liable to refund any monies should the agreed trek/tour be shortened due to injury, illness, non-interest or changed weather/environmental and political conditions. If trek/tour is incomplete there is no refund. If trekker cancels trek after permits, bus/flight tickets and other arrangements etc. have made, a 40% cancellation fee is charged.
